The whole "Max is Gay" thing definitely needs to be explained to the noobie viewer. You can pretty much get that Jane and Alex are sisters from watching and if you don't it doesn't matter. Also, you'll notice that Brad is black within the first few episodes.

You didn't need to watch it more than 20 times for that information. You could have just watched it once and then looked at the credits. Or checked imdb or whatever.
