That's almost exactly my experience regarding DePalma. Blow Out really makes everything he did both before and after make a lot more sense. I'd now rank him up there among my favorites.

That's odd, because I loved the movie and then went on the internet (this was around the time it came out, it seems to be getting more love now fortunately) to see people reacting as if Friedkin had raped their mothers.

I disagree. Not that the original is poorly shot or anything, but in Kaufman's version damn near every frame has some weird detail that's just off, or something off-kilter in the background, plus it makes San Francisco look really fucking scary.
