yeah, can we please stop using the word "pretentious" to mean "things we don't like"?

"blackened Jesus Lizard" you say? that sets up expectations i worry could be too high, but damned if i'm not checking it out.

i remember watching one of those Siskel & Ebert episodes after Siskel died (which means it wasn't Siskel & Ebert i guess, but oh well) and the lady who was filling in said Gladiator was "one of the best films (she) had ever seen." now, i like Gladiator, but really? how many movies have you seen?

a professor of mine once said Detroit was the most depressing place he had ever been. and he's from Cleveland.

looking it up on IMDB, most of the cast did. besides Morita you also had Tom Noonan, Chris Sarandon and Ernie Hudson (well, i like him anyway.)

i think these clips are improved by putting them together in one handy package:

i hope so, or he'll be in big trouble.

i like Jeffrey Combs just as much as the next guy, but he is not Mitchum-esque.

the car chases made the whole movie. also, that one chick in a cheerleader outfit.

for some reason, all i can think of when i hear that kid talk is that episode of TNG where the kid pretends to be an Android like Data.

i said it in yesterday's Oscar-O-Meter post, but he could be our generation's Bruce Dern. too bad Hollywood doesn't crank out westerns anymore, or surely Shannon would be in a lot of them the way Dern was seemingly in almost every western made in the 60's and 70's.

but apparently there's a scene in The Help where someone eats a chocolate pie that isn't really chocolate, if you know what i mean.

sold. dammit to hell, i just can't not watch something that gets compared to Stalker.

in after the buzzer i know, but i saw this exact argument more or less back when i was dumb enough to read the IMDB boards.

it really does sound like the most insufferable movie ever.

you find that harder to believe than John C. Reilly married to Tilda Swinton?

i've said it before, and i'll say it again: while i'm not sure about Cronenberg seemingly trying to become a "prestige" director, the world would be a much more awesome place if i could legitimately say "Academy Award winner David Cronenberg".

the Space and Rocket Center is fun, though i haven't been since i was in 5th grade. i need to go back. i wonder if they still have the Subterfuge, that was pretty cool.

am i the only one looking forward to Take Shelter? i loved Shotgun Stories and Michael Shannon could very well be this generation's Bruce Dern.

wasn't this already on DVD? and a barebones one at that, so i'm not sure why it needed an Archive release.
