If you check out Ben Fold's side project, Fear of Pop, you can kind of hear how the experimentation there leads to the different sound that shows up on UBofRM. Plus, Fear of Pop has the first, that I know of, collaboration between Ben Folds and William Shatner—and it's pretty cool.

The "I love you, Goodbye" part of that song is awesome and whenever I listen to it I want them to just stretch that part out a little longer.
