One of the best things about this underseen movie, of course, is Ryuichi Sakamoto's wonderful, haunting score - I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned, as it helps to give Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence much of its dreamlike qualities. A great film, in my opinion.
