I'm kinda with you.  Out of all of Miyazaki's films, this is one of my least favorite…but that may be because of what they said in the review, where it changes tone halfway through and has a muddled ending.

I'm surprised it's not called "Sportscar Movie".

I had nightmares about that thing for years, off and on.  Though the one I dreamt about was even scarier looking (slightly more ghoulish with white eyes and pin-sized pupils), and wore a red plaid shirt instead of blue.

If someone does have money to solve the problem, make sure everyone involved pissily refuses for a few episodes first.
