It means someone paid, like, $10 million for the distribution rights at Sundance, the movie was hyped as some indie breakthrough, then it barely broke $1 million at the box office. Happens every year.

Movie wasn't great, but it was one of the rare examples of a movie that's better than its source material (sorry, but I found that book to be a bad Carl Hiaasen wannabe, and I was especially disappointed because Barry's columns have cracked me up on many a road trip.)
