What translations are you reading? The newer Pevear and Volokhonsky translations do a far better job at capturing the levity and wit than the older, more prosaic workhorses like say, Constance Garnett.

I don't know if all of the non-on camera sides of porn would be inherently soul crushing. My good friend works in the Compliance department at Hustler, and while there seem to be a fair amount of surreal tasks on a daily basis, he tells me that for the most part it's a very typical office desk job.

I think if the morality of the Rita as MRF subplot bothers you, you're probably watching the wrong show. Arrested Development has done uncomfortable, borderline offensive comedy (and done it particularly well) since the very beginning.
