I suspect that for many of us who don't have an asshole roommate story the reason is because we could be (at least in part) fairly big assholes ourselves.

Me and my roommates used to get involved in some very elaborate prank wars that I could probably spin into sounding like a series of horror story but we were males in our late-teens, early-twenties (i.e. fucking assholes) and, to be honest, I had a great time.

That would be the most honest outcome of Axl's college adventure. That character doesn't have the maturity or the intellectual chops for college at that stage in his life. I know he's there on an athletic scholarship, but still.

One of my roommates in Soph & Junior year did that. At the time I considered it a plus.

Freshman year I commuted to school because I didn't have any money. Sophomore & Junior year I had an apartment with 4 other guys and we got along pretty well (mostly). Senior year I was essentially homeless (no money, again) and crashed on various couches and floors for the year.
