I love Guralnick, but my favorite Elvis bio is by Dave Marsh. It's a short, super potent read, highly recommended.

Reason #22 is Rome Wasn't Built in a Day

Hogwash, Wonderful World is a stone classic, an obvious influence on Smokey Robinson's lyric craft, and covered by no less than Simon & Garfunkel (with guest vocals by James Taylor.)

All kidding aside, I'm going with Coal Miner's Daughter. It has a slightly TV Movie feel, but the script and performances beat the likes of Walk the Line all to hell.

The first Shumaker Batman (with Val Kilmer) was no worse, and IMO better, than the Tim Burton Batmans. Nicholson or no, those movies sucked balls. I rank them thusly: III, I, II, IV

That amazing Dead Island trailer seemed as influenced by Lost as by The Walking Dead. Coming out of a close up of the Eye, cross cutting timelines, the music was very Lost-y too.

My tangential childhood memory of WUSA is that it was programmed on ABC at 11:30pm on August 16, 1977, the day Elvis died. It was pre-empted by a 30 minute news special hosted by Geraldo Rivera after the local news. I made a cassette audio recording that included the pre-emption voice-over announcement at the top. …

How about we all agree to just pick on Billy Ray Cyrus instead? I resent his success and exploitation of his daughter far more than little ol' Miley, who at least sings better than her dad.

Noted!

Fast Zombie, the one musical I might recommend you try, if you aren't alienated by the gay-themed subject matter that is (no snark or condescension intended,) is Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The music is mostly based in punk, not metal, but goddamn does it rock.

Too Lazy To Log In, that line is classic. I will be repeating it, so thank you.

That Walken strip tease tap dance is one of my favorite musical sequences ever. People don't even believe me when I tell them about it. I think I will put a clip of that on my iPhone so I can just say "look at this shit" and show them on the spot, because as many times as I recommend it, no one ever rents it.

I guess it's 25, not 35. Can't get used to this new math. But Roxanne is that old, and Lady Marmalade and Diamond Dogs are 70's tunes, so even older than that.

Moulin Rouge used songs of the past too: The Sound of Music (referenced), Can Can, etc. Heck, Like a Virgin is over 35 years old - that's no more distant than early vaudeville was to Singin' in the 50's.

West Side Story is MGM, that seems like a glaring omission. Great article though.

He already unofficially remade it. See my post above. Or maybe that was intentionally implied…

Levy Christ what a Mega-hack. We'll all be better off renting Innerspace. Yeesh.

I have a feeling this will be at least as good as The Hangover, but that's a really low bar to clear. I believe over enough time people will look back and wonder why so many people thought it was something special. God knows I don't see it. Even Wedding Crashers was better.

You're telling me! When I worked at Turner I made a Beatles parody short, and Mr. Osborne was kind enough to read an intro for it, giving it his TCM royal treatment.

I tried watching the British Skins on DVD, and for reasons having nothing to with Puritanical values, I found it revolting and unwatchable. All the main characters are unbearable assholes, which is fine for a two hour movie perhaps, but a real drag for an hour long series.
