I enjoyed Steve Martin's "Shopgirl" when I read it over a decade ago. Perhaps it was disqualified on the technicality of being a novella, not a novel. Or perhaps it surprised no one that Steve Martin, excuse me, Mr Steve Martin, could write something smart.
