i'm getting tired of music writers making grand statements out of subtle lyrics, or interpreting everything as self-referential when really it's a line in a song.

I think what justifies this series is that basically everybody who likes or loves REM is very conflicted about their relationship to the band…they are a confounding band that to this day makes me question whether they're totally lame or not, even though I love them. There are more interesting bands out there to write

i'd definitely agree, but it makes perfect sense—the first two were low-profile, recorded simply and free of any pressure to be a huge pop album, so there isn't a lot of that distinctive 80's studio trickery and excess. Later on, they had more pressure, more money for work in the studio, so their sound became a little

Drop the tone of righteous indignation. Look, this has nothing to do with accepting that other people have different taste. This is an article about how the narrative the music media have been painting of this person may not be entirely true, or may be hiding deeper issues within the music industry. It

the 'stuffing,' so to speak, usually comes from the episodic nature of these movies, and is a common mistake amongst amateur/hack writers…rather than finding one driving narrative, it's easier to just have one neat thing happen…then another…and try to hook it together into some sort of 'quirky' framework.

@ ElDan, yeah, I don't get the whole "play the full album" thing, either…I'm definitely a "whole-album" kind of listener at home, but when I saw the Pixies on the Doolittle tour, it just felt a little bit like putting the CD on, definitely missed some of the excitement because of that (good show, though)

good cut-off album for Pearl Jam.
