Indeed: "at three times Earth’s mass, it would have three times the gravity" is misleading. The bigger the planet, the further away you are from its centre of mass. Because of this, surface gravity is proportional to radius, not volume. If Proxima B has the same density as Earth but is big enough to have three times…
