Devil's advocate, without inserting my own opinion/experience regarding gentrification: In re-reading the interview, I don't think that's what he's talking about at all.  I think a few readers had a knee-jerk reaction to tag a sensitive and extremely complicated issue onto a guy they think reeks of vapid.
