Well I've never been able to get into Trek, so I can't say how it compares, but I enjoyed all of season 1. Even its silliest moments (Infection, TKO, Grail), are so ridiculous that you can just laugh, embrace the cheese, and have a good time.

The good news is that the first episode of the series proper is a vast improvement over the pilot. The political story throughout the series is very strong, and its really entertaining to watch the screws slowly tighten.
