Boardwalk Empire's numbers are down because the show isn't really worth watching. It might be the best-written OK show on TV. I have yet to watch an episode of Boardwalk Empire that made me yearn for a time machine so I could travel one week into the future and immediately watch the next episode of Boardwalk Empire.

Out of touch with both life and the TV show Community.

It's not even "verbosity" that bothers me. It's the stream of Authoritative Bullshit. On a fundamental level, reading Todd is like watching Fox News. In both cases, the substance of the piece flows entirely from a baseless premise that's posited as true. We all think falling in love is the hardest thing to do? IT'S

"We tell ourselves the hardest thing to do is fall in love."

Let me clarify: It's mostly the opening scene of THIS EPISODE that I would describe as "racist."

This is a pretty racist episode of TV in my opinion. At least the opening is. God, Homicide gets so much praise, but the entire first season (which is where I stopped watching on a recent attempt to watch all of Homicide) is so hammy and heavy-handed and the entire thing is trapped in that 1990s idea of

I Don't Under$tand
I don't think I understand how it's possible that AMC will save money by NOT airing Breaking Bad for an entire year. Doesn't AMC MAKE money by airing this program"? I guess the plan is to put cheaper shows on for a whole year? Whatever. How about 52 weeks of The Killing for 2012? That would save

One weird thing I remember about this movie is that it makes such a big deal of Sugar Ray, but the soundtrack at the big, climactic Sugar Ray concert is a Mighty Mighty Bosstones song (The Impression That I Get). This movie had no obligation to identify a real band. Doing so did not certify the plausibility of its

Grief, you see, is like climbing a mountain. Rescue Me is like learning to like hiking. Is Rescue Me like learning to like hiking a mountain of grief? SYMBOLISM!

TVDW Explains the World
In this week's Rescue Me review, Todd VanDerWerff explains what grief is like. Todd VanDerWerff = Authoritative Voice.

This Is Stupid
A. "Film is an industry" is the dumbest shit I ever heard ever. Rodin is art. Movies are not. FUCK YOU IN YOUR FUCKING FACE, British Court. They basically concluded that nothing created for a movie is subject to copyright. Let's see how that goes over.

Maybe Don't Suck
Seriously, they don't shoot Zobelle? HE'S STANDING RIGHT THERE! They could have spared ONE BIKER GUY to shoot Zobelle, for crying out loud. Then we have to go through an ENTIRE SEASON OF FIND THE BABY IN IRELAND?!? And don't even get me started on that bullshit deal at the end of Season 3. I'm

Grappling Hooks
As much as Kenny disliked the apartment scene, it did produce one of my favorite Mozzie Moments of all-time: "Don't ever try to send a grappling hook through the post office." I had resigned myself to a Mozzie-free episode, making his entrance/non sequitur a bit more entertaining. I also loved how

Who's Starring?
I heard Vincent Chase passed on this.

Well Put
"Watching (SportsCenter) has become like eating at the same theme restaurant every night, with the same fake-friendly waitress."

Thank you, Todd, for explaining the policy. I'm sure the AVClub's community champagne bucket is mostly swill, melted chocolate and strawberry seeds at this point, but thank you for taking the time. As I'm sure you can predict, my view of your justification (as follows) differs from yours. But as a reader who invests

Yeah, that's me. I still exist.

Why can't it be about both of those things? You enjoy the reviews your way, and I enjoy them mine. I don't think we have competing interests here.

#winning posed an interesting question here.
