CharlieP,
He made enough money from Seinfeld that I can't bring myself to feel sorry for him getting typecast.
The reference to Box of Rain is a nice touch, since it was Phil who sang that song. Nice little inside joke for closeted Deadheads.
Other One
Tecumseh,
The latter.
It's on the DVD for this season. Some of the episodes have short "behind the scenes" type of pieces, and I think it was in the one for "The Pen" that he talks about this.
Jason Alexander's absence from "The Pen"
Listening to him talk about how outraged he was that he was not in one (ONE!) episode really made me think Jason Alexander is an insufferable prick. I think he even claims to have given the powers-that-be an ultimatum of some sort. He came across as annoyingly self-important…

Yeah Janice definitely was always scheming, which is why I'd disagree that she got "sucked into the life of just another mob wife." I think that she, to some extent at least, consciously chose that life.
When exactly did she die, in relation to production of the show? Did they see it coming? I know there are some scenes where they CGI'd old footage in, but it sure seems like that's really her in the hospital bed at the beginning of season 2.
