No kidding? I read Brown's novel Fay (which would make a damn good film itself), which is set in the same universe, and he did not strike me as the magical realism/supernatural type writer.

Portnoy's Complaint is okay, but I think you're right. You hear about how shocking it is, but by today's standards it's just not.

Definitely a cause for concern, but he hasn't actually put out a film or television show since he came out as a bat-shit insane right-winger, so I'll withhold trepidation. It is possible to keep your politics out of your artwork*.
