Bleak and heavy handed can work if you're really committed to it.  See Millennium, seasons 1 and 2. DON'T SEEMillennium, season 3.  Ever, for any reason.

I watched it on a plane.  I didn't think it was that bad, albeit I did think the credits sequence was probably the best thing about it, which tells you something.

It's kind of unfair, but whenever I see DJ Qualls, I'm reminded of that Simpsons line:

One game I have heard of, but never played, but sounds like it would be up your alley would be Space Alert. You play the crew of a space ship, whilst various terrible things happen to you and you try and respond and survive.  As a bonus, apparently each game lasts 10 minutes.  Here's a much more detailed review (http:/

You and others like you may be pleased to hear that a new Fighting Fantasy book was published only recently.

I just became a father, so I'm using that as an excuse to read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell to the baby (and re-read it myself).  I'm confident that, as a four-day old, she's enjoying the wry humour, lengthy and digressive footnotes and interesting approach to magic.

If you enjoyed The Emperor, you might try I Didn't Do It For You by Michaela Wrong.  It's well-written, accessible bit of reportage about the history of Eritrea and Ethiopia.  It is, of course, depressing as all hell.  Her other books (about the DRC and Kenya) are also very good.

I have to say Tortoise have never really done it for me, but I may have chosen a poor entry point.  'Millions Now Living Will Never Die' is a great title, but I found it a bit too free jazz for my tastes.  Maybe I need to try one of their other albums.

I'm in the same boat.  I adore The Fatal Shore - it is an excellent piece of popular history; erudite and accessible.

It depends what you want.  As the article hints at, there are different styles of post-rock.  Some is heavier and more guitar driven (Slint, June of '44), some is more classically influenced (Rachel's).  Both are generally characterised by a lack of vocals, although long samples of speech are pretty commonly used.
