I often read TV Club for the same reason: it functions excellently as a substitute for seeing something that I'm mildly curious about, but don't really want to spend the time watching.

I wouldn't start with War & Peace.  My first Tolstoy was Anna Karenina, which was actually titled "Levin & Kitty" in my mind.  I skimmed all the Anna stuff (and found Vronsky kind of intolerable) but fell completely in love with Kitty.
