I assumed the point of the plot was that Jeff was a dick, but they decided to illustrate it that particular way in order to mock the guy named Kim. I don't think it was "supposed to be the joke" that people laughed at watching it, it was "supposed to be the joke" that Harmon and Co. laughed at making it.

The Hobbit was written/published before LOTR, you know. Not sure it counts as a "prequel" in that sense, or how it could be underwhelming.
