Yes, this report is disappointingly naïve.

Firstly, I think a minuscule nationalist movement along the lines of Catalonia/Scotland/Whatever is stupid. They’d be worse off in every sense as a sovereign entity and they have no actual plans for independence. They are, or were, literally already entirely self-governing and functioned more as a suzerainty of Spain.…

The 90% voting for independence is extremely misleading. The vote was declared illegal by a Catalan court, and so the people against independence did not participate in the (extremely difficult to access) vote.

Sorry, Whitney, but this write-up is a terrible simplification of what’s going on. You may wish to learn more about why Spain is cracking down on the secessionists.
