The whole “there are only two genders” thing always gets me. It really doesn’t contradict anything I said in the first couple paragraphs to justify the cis/trans terminology, only my little caveat at the end.

I’m with you on the frustration front, but really all it takes is people having a need for it. And sadly, we don’t. I mean, I’m sure we’d like it but we’re unwilling to pay for it. Mention better public anything and you will need to mention taxes. And that is a non-starter for most. Tesla’s doing well in that regard…

I think it’s a bit unfair to call this a giant pissing contest. Sure, maybe it is an example of billionaires trying to one up each other. But it’s certainly also possible that these people are passionate about this stuff and have the money to actually go and do it.

Ballast is ballast.... I don’t care if you strap on a ton of lead or a ton of steel, when it’s on the exterior of the vessel, it’s not gonna make a difference.

well, for one, the US Navy Virginia Class submarine isn’t completely controlled by a video game controller - only the periscope is. the systems that actually matter in getting you down and back to the surface are much more complex and, more importantly, have redundancies.

I mean it’s done the dive before, so it was clearly capable of doing it. How the design held up after multiple 4000m dives is another matter, I suppose.

What’s the big deal about the sub using Logitech?  The US Navy uses XBox 360 controllers on its submarines.   And the world’s first robotic IVF procedure used a PS5 controller.  

It’s not a scientific endeavor, it’s a cottage industry for wealthy, thrill-seeking tourists.

It seems what the Coast Guard is trying very diplomatically not to say is that unless this sub is found on the surface, there’s no hope of rescue.
