Not sure where you’re going with that point. 80 mph highway cruising is pretty standard once you get outside of the major cities in SoCal.

If you were on a road you were unfamiliar with and there was no “reduced speed ahead” sign then you can’t really slow down until you actually see the sign though. Are people really expected to slam on the brakes? That doesn’t seem safe.

There a plenty of DC, MD and VA roads where you don’t see the sign until you are right on top of it, at which point you start to slow down.
