Buffy was and still is one of the only shows willing to close out each season like it’s a series finale, no cliff hanger required. I always loved that so much.

even when/if they knew though, you have to consider the fact that these are still kids, not fully formed, fully self supporting adults who could necessarily say no to their parents. Some of them probably did it for love/approval and some out of obedience/fear/to get along.
