The author is not correct in her assessment. In virtually all of sports, players sign contract with teams for a term of years. The team can sale or trade the rights of player to another team. Often players can ‘force’ a trade.

Unsurprisingly, people only watching for a 1 month period every 4 years does make for a financially viable sports league.
