As someone who’s city is currently experiencing dangerous air quality due to forest fire smoke, I concur. 

That woman showed more self-restraint than I will ever have.

It looks like what I make when I’m excited to eat vegetables from the garden, but nothing is quite ready, so I try to fill out the meal with anything I can find out there (there are lots of edible weeds!).

I’m not sure it’s an upside, but there is an entertaining side to it.

I just said as a white woman, I have not had to experience the indignities that you mention here, but I recognize it, and will call people out who do not recognize it.
