Not sure about Futurama but Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann [1982 film with Fred Ward and Belinda Bauer] had this very plot element revealed at the end.

Yeah, the idea that the suit was a construct of the ring was good, the execution just didn’t quite hit the mark. I really didn’t think it was bad though, there were much bigger problems with the movie than the suit.
