I would be super interested in a show where there was a successful, large-scale slave revolt and the confederate states are actually controlled by black people.

Agree. Also, is it really an alternate history?

As someone who minored in history and took a special interest in the civil war era of American History, it doesn’t even make sense.

Here’s how it would have gone if the confederacy had “won” the war:

Badly. For them.

As in, they wouldn’t have managed to survive longer than maybe 20-30 years. Because of the slavery

Plus a lot of Jews and Roma HAVE complained about High Castle, it just got brushed over and people seem to have forgotten it now. But back when they did up that subway car I remember it being damn loud.

Even if we put aside the problematic facts that slavery is still having a huge impact today (which we shouldn’t!), and that this show is helmed by two white guys not exactly known for their subtlety or inclusiveness (which again, we shouldn’t), the history of attempts to portray a “Confederacy survives” scenario in SF

There also aren’t any black people in the Nazi States of America, if you noticed. If I remember correctly, the first black person we see is in the Neutral Zone (though he turns out to be an important character in a ton of ways). So, it’s not just Jews. In fact, in a later episode, Reinhard Heydrich clearly states that

I’m going to talk about the show as a comparison. Don’t silence me.

How about rewriting the show, to portray a future in which a slave revolt led to the enslavement of white people? Or something that is both more interesting and more insightful than this?

The fact that the more they are talking about this the more they are describing modern day America yet they are calling it alternative history shows how fucked up this will be. They are already coming from a place of not knowing how the current reality works. So... the fuck? You just want to have the South declare

the fact that it seems as though wypipo would literally rather die than save themselves by upsetting the hierarchy and actually taking the suggestions of the people they are going to be hurting the quickest and the most and first.

That’s true, but the Handmaid’s Tale is science fiction and is the tv adaptation of a book that came out 30 years ago. We knew what to expect from it and it’s the closest thing a white woman can get to telling a slave narrative.

This, all of this. Responding to bump up.

They always talk mess about wanting to have a dialogue. It must be with each other because they keep starting these conversations, they never go well because white people don’t listen and then Black people give up on the conversation and talk amongst ourselves.

As Roxane Gay pointed out, there are about a million more interesting alternative histories they could do. One where Reconstruction was actually completed would be interesting. Or if America had lost the Revolution (so slavery would have been outlawed much earlier). Or a million other things. Alternative histories are

Now playing

I think the other thing enraging me is that Denzel has a production deal with this network. (Issa Rae does too, finally, but one outrage at a time.)

I hear you.

Another thing: I’m tired of the comparison to the Man in the High Castle.

You’d be amazed by how many are taking the “hey, but there are two black people here” bait.

But that type of shit already exist. So why not have a show that explains how slavery never really went away instead of having a story predicated on the South winning and having the formal institution of slavery around? They’re making the problems that black people are facing even more removed from reality yet wanting

What I find as an additional insult is their cries that, “Hey, it’s really okay, because we already brought on two black folks as writers/producers.” Ummmmm…and Agent Orange in the White House brought in Ben Carson’s ass. The involvement of TWO (or any) black people does not cancel out the fact that this was a
