FYI Eorl was the first king of Rohan, and Theoden is of the house of Eorl, so Eorlingas are basically other members of his house and their retainers.

I guess because that means digging up the street outside 9 million houses, but maybe I'm overestimating the invasiveness of the work involved.

Where I live in the UK 35% of homes have no parking of their own, either because they live in apartments or row houses with no garage or driveway. Until a solution is found for these people, widespread EV adoption is a non starter, and I've yet to hear a decent solution that isn't vastly expensive or disruptive.

Has anyone ever said gal with a straight face when not wearing spats and a fedora?

Don’t worry, I have. It’s the better show in many ways even though it didn’t get as much press.

I guess then you’re into the discussion about whether the Normans were actual Vikings who went a-Viking or an early modern Christian state like any other in Europe. I think that’s why 1066 is picked, because Harald was a Viking in the quintessential rape and pillage mould.

Yeah, if you know the history you can fill in the blanks and draw parallels (Hvitserk is basically Guthrum in this I guess, for some reason) but if you came into this show with a blank slate you could be forgiven for wondering what the hell happened for six seasons. Too much time spent on meandering interpersonal

In England at least it’s taught in school that the Viking age truly ended at Stamford Bridge in 1066, just before Hastings. That’s when the last truly Viking warlord Harald Hardrada and his Jomsvikings were defeated, and I’m not aware that there were any large scale invasion attempts after that.

It’s Hirst’s Englishness showing through, I guess. Just as you can’t have colonial America without George Washingtom showing up at some point, he’s not going to miss this chance to repeat the English foundation myth

The problem I have with ‘come’ as opposed to ‘cum’ is that it feels so formal like you’re writing a Mills & Boone novel. It feels so repressed that you just feel silly writing it.

Slavery in Britain itself has been illegal since the 12th century, so there wouldn’t have been black slaves in Britain at any time (legally, at least)

Vikings doesn’t do a great job of articulating Alfred’s transformation, beyond the simple boy -> man take that we get here.

Holy shit you're right! I've thought it was Sabrina for years! Although I must have been four or five when it was on, so in my defence...

Alright guys we've closed the loop, AV Club is finished!

How strange. I understand MJH doesn’t want to be involved in more Sabrina stuff because of her religion, but I can’t see Nick being too expensive or difficult.

Fun fact, in the Judge Dredd comic in 2000 AD, Ireland has been partially converted into an actual theme park called Murphyville, and its primary industry is catering old country fantasies to American tourists.

I’m shocked and appalled that Harvey never once climbed in through Sabrina’s window, which is my abiding memory of the 90s sitcom.

How do you know that it’s any ‘better’ if it’s in production? I remember when everyone was praying for Picard to debut because of how much better it would be than Discovery.

It feels like the grade is how good the show is technically, while the review is about how closely it matches Zack’s particular vision of Star Trek in his head.

John Oliver isn’t especially well known in the UK, he wasnt on tv here much and his show isnt broadcast here on the major channels. Knighthoods tend to go to people primarily or occasionally resident in Britain who have done cool, high profile stuff or cool less high profile stuff for a long time. Or have friends who
