Any and all current and potential nuclear power plants are ill suited for peak power, but great for base load power. Hydrocarbon plants are the best suited energy production for peak power.

“Spent” fuel rods have 95% of their fissile uranium remaining. As they react the various daughter nuclei and transuranics inhibit neutron flux in older reactors. Newer reactors can either burn those isotopes or ignore them.

Actually a nuclear plant would not be ideal. Once a nuclear plant gets going, you cant just turn it off. And if you do, good luck getting it running. Nuclear power plants cant meet peak loads; however they are fantastic for base loads.

Currently running reactors are ancient generation 2 designs. Current technology is gen 4. Gen 4 reactors only produce around 1% the waste of gen 2 reactors, and the waste is short lived instead of gen 2’s long lived waste.
