Getting stuck on a ride was one of my biggest fears as a child. I probably would have actually died of panic.

We’re awesome though.
There is no inconsistency. Even for people who somehow missed out on what transgender identity means before the past week or two, at this point I think it’s pretty impossible to still think that a trans woman is just “someone who decides to be a woman” unless you’re acting in bad faith (i.e. trolling).
Actually the city ombudsman position did require applicants to list their race, because the idea was that the office should reflect the diversity of the community when dealing with the police. They said they were investigating possible wrongdoing.
Speaking as a long-term unemployed person, taking a job — multiple jobs, actually, since she was an Africana Studies professor, head of the NAACP chapter and city ombudsman — under false pretenses is a pretty big deal.
There is a thing called “transethnicity.” It refers to the identity issues suffered by people who were adopted out of their ethnic group (generally POC adopted by white folks). There is no recognized condition of someone who just feels that they’re a different race. Race is basically a social construct that’s imposed…
It honestly makes me think that they really wanted to get divorced and were looking for an excuse to do it.
I used to be of the “just ignore the trolls” mentality, but I’ve come around to the idea that whether or not a comment is meant as trolling, it can still be super hurtful and contribute to a toxic culture if not addressed. Especially because as far as I understand this system, for it to be visible someone must have…
It’s a stereotype that’s tied into the logic of anti-blackness pretty closely. When people talk about how black men go after fat white women, the idea is that black men desire whiteness so badly that they want the white women whom white men don’t want. It’s assuming that black people don’t have the dignity to value…
I think the point of “Pills and Potions” (or maybe it’s on “Bed of Lies” I don’t really remember) is that he got her into pills. Don’t know if that’s true or not of course.
You must have enjoyed Silver Linings Playbook.
Does “the hairy eyeball” not have a particular meaning outside of the South? Here it basically means the same thing as “side eye.” So IMO a hairy eyeball tattoo is pretty clever.
Or the tattoo version of the pro-gay-marriage cake.
Honestly it makes a certain amount of sense to me. I saw a tattoo artist on tv one time (so I’m an expert, right, I know) saying that he doesn’t give people face or neck tattoos anymore because having a tattoo in those places can end up making it almost impossible to get a job and he doesn’t want to be responsible for…
What do you think makes it an unproductive as opposed to a productive discussion?
I really want to see that movie now.
The worst thing IMO is that major reproductive rights orgs are forced to spend their funding and person-hours on keeping an eye on her and her ilk to prevent being sabotaged constantly.
Didn’t they do a study recently showing that black fathers are actually more involved in their kids’ lives than white fathers?
I dunno, but I’m leaning towards no. On the one hand, Sulkowicz is a major figure in the ongoing controversy about how colleges should handle issues of sexual assault, so if this piece reveals anything game-changing about her or her history, it would definitely be a big story that Jezebel ought to cover as part of…
I think artists have certain responsibilities in how they create their art — to be honest about who contributed to their work and give credit where it’s due, to take their subject matter with the level of seriousness it deserves, etc. I can understand feeling that Sulkowicz has a responsibility to other rape…
