What controller are you using? My Wiimotes often shut off when switching to Wii mode, but I just pop out a battery, then put it back in and it works fine after that.

Guess its a WiiU only thing then. Although I've had it in at the Wii Channel screen before and when I tried to boot up Project M it froze my system.

Important to note that when you go to boot up the mod, there's a certain method to do it. Don't fully insert the SD card until the opening cutscene is mostly over.
