Yep. I’m in the magazine business and I was laid off from one title last year after surviving the previous year’s round. I’d pick surviving the layoffs and keeping my paycheck/health insurance EVERY TIME. Being let go was devastating mentally and emotionally, and fucking terrifying in the practical sense as well. I am

I’m not from there but know enough that “...understandably horrifying possibility to people who barely tolerate the visitors keeping them economically afloat” is not the issue, it’s the TYPES of visitors that have changed and infuriate the locals. Montauk survived just fine without them. That sentence gave me a

The existing tension in Montauk is usually between summer tourists from the city, extremely rich people who own homes they infrequently occupy, and regular people making a living.

Might I recommend Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick? It is a compilation of stories told by defectors from North Korea, and really gives a very diverse look at North Korea (everyone from orphans to doctors) and what it is like to grow up there.

I think she may have been a lot more accurate than most foreign writers over there

People were like that until he died. He was Wacko Jacko and then was re-deified after he died.

Janet all the fucking way. I really didn’t think everyone ACTUALLY forgot about his being a pedophile, I thought everyone “forgot” he was a child molester.

White privilege

So, uh... Can we stop worshiping this shitbrick as some sort of legend now?

what.

Money

This. I am so confused.

Isn’t possession of child porn in itself a crime? Why wasn’t he arrested if the police found all that stuff?
