Hypocrisy shmipocrisy. When the Prez-Elect starts appointing literal nazis I will take what I can get!

Possibly? I’m not 100% on that. I live about an hour from Milwaukee, and every precinct around here (as far as I’m aware) used paper ballots that were then fed into a machine for electric counting and transmission. Even if some precincts were entirely digital though, the audit could reveal potential tampering.
If he didn’t actually get enough votes, the election shouldn’t be given to an inexperienced narcissistic nutjob just because a bunch of babies with guns want to threaten to everyone else.
Read J. Alex Halderman’s rationale for asking for a recount here.
I think his reasoning is sound - it’s probably not an issue, but given every crazy damned thing that has happened, it would be good to put the issue to rest by actually counting the paper ballots. Or as he puts it himself:
But it isn’t unheard of, in terms of people reporting the electronic voting system was compromised. I recall about 10 years ago a story broke about a programmer for the voting booths came out and said that his employers wanted him to write a program to make votes to switch candidates for ‘testing purposes’. There was…
I don’t know if they have been substantiated, but there have been some reports that a few small counties have reported more votes than actual ballots cast, which would seem to show at least voting machine error and a need to check what is going on. I don’t know that it will change anything, but given the known…
It is a bit bonkers, but you can see the rationale. Clinton is winning the popular vote by 2.5 million, but lost the election after a ton of shady shit out of both Russia and the FBI.
Governor of NC could actually steal the election by delaying the confirmation of the results, apparently? A recount of Wisconsin has zero chance of stopping Trump... unless they found a legitimate discrepancy that gave it to Clinton. And in Michigan. And in PA. Extremely unlikely.
Can you recount the tally on a hacked computer?
If you were a election security researcher concerned with the transparency of an election in a campaign season when the official stance of the White House and National Security complex is that cyberattacks originating in Russia against the DNC as well as the infiltration of voting machines in Illinois and Arizona both…
Because e-mails, right?
Fair question, and glad you asked, and YES it’s pretty different from the shenanigans going on here in NC:
Yup, I agree, it probably won’t change the outcome (we can cross our fingers, though, right??), but I think this quote from Halderman’s article is meaningful:
My answer in both cases is the same: count the votes, manually, because in both cases I think (at least, in Stein’s case, I hope) that they’ll prevail.
I wouldn’t assume Clinton doesn’t want to do this, exactly. More like the risk/reward analysis looks very unappealing to her. The odds of it actually working are slim, and regardless of how it goes, trying would get her a lot of ill will. Especially since there was a lot of talk about “respecting the results” of the…
I read the same. A consistent 7% swing in districts using electronic ballots vs. paper ones is...odd.
It’s not comparable. Governor McCrory is trying to get the state legislature to straight up override the election results. A recount, on the other hand, could just re-affirm that Donald Trump won the states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania (assuming it doesn’t prove that Clinton was the true winner). That’s…
I think HRC is smart to have someone else do this on her behalf. If I were I’d stay as far away from this as possible. If it fails she won’t look like a sore loser. And if succeeds she might become President, although it’s probably wishful thinking.
As a humble (and fascinated) computer science major at a tiny community college in Asheville, I can say that there is enough evidence to at least look into it. There are unusual coincidences, anomalies that have happened (more unusual than anything McCrory is bitching about) that could either a) be evidence of…
It seems that we’re careening in that direction, anyhow. All I’ve got left is the shruggie ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
