Does it matter though? If the sound actually does sound like the N-word, or if it doesn’t sound like the N-word but every English speaker who knows the word will hear the N-word when this sound happens, isn’t the end result the same - a growl that “sounds like” a slur and should be changed?

That’s a similar problem Koreans face so I can relate. There is a word that means “You are” so it’s said a lot but in Korea it’s pronounced “Nee-ga”. So some people can misunderstand it especially when it comes up in Korean songs.

Every zombie in the plague is some Redcap that shouted getting infected/bitten by zombies was their god given right, and it’s Communism to try and stop it.   Screaming the N-word as they charge others in their undeath is spot-on world building.  

Politics aside, killing nazi zombies or racist zombies is even that much more satisfying. 

In that case they should mix it up a little and add “Stolen Election”, “Covid Conspiracy”, “Build the Wall” to their lines to make it easier to identify them as such...I guess?
