If they did that, and instead of timed exclusives gave massive release discounts (to compete with Steam’s prices), almost no one but hardcore brand loyalists would be complaining about Epic.

The key difference there would be that Valve doesn’t, to my knowledge, actively require anyone to keep their games exclusive to Steam. Steam’s dominance just ensures it. Epic actively locks down exclusives with monetary compensation.

This is so true. And so depressing. Ostensible allies will turn on our own for the smallest of grievances, while letting actual enemies off of on grounds of ‘we have to be nice to them to change their minds’ or ‘we need to understand where they’re coming from’.
