There is zero evidence you will pay anything for it. Pioneer released FREE firmware updates for some of their aftermarket head units to include carplay. As in Pioneer is providing a free update, which includes carplay, so you can get it for FREE if you have a Pioneer head unit. Why would they do that if they'er paying

In what way does it affect you? How does a piece of software, which isn't running, affect you? Or are we talking in some weird emotion existential way?

I would rather pay say $20 bucks for a car with carplay and android auto, so I can use my phone for navigation on my head unit, than pay $2000 for the automakers shitty implementation. Although there's currently no evidence they're charging for it, that's just your assumption.

Okay, assuming that there was some standard they could adopt that worked with all phones, they should provide that. However considering neither google nor apple have any plans to develop and release software their competitors can use.... both of these pieces of software are a MASSIVE improvement over the

That's the thing, there aren't a huge number of variables. The majority of cars sold today run a kernel called QNX, which is what Carplay/Android Auto/Mirrorlink all run on. Here's a press release by QNX, who is affiliated with blackberry:

Also just to clear the air, android auto does not allow app developers currently to publish their apps:

My point is just, it could happen that an OEM chooses not to put android auto on their device, thus "hardly Apples fault". Seeing as Hyundai already sells cars with both, like you said, apple is not strong arming out android auto, I totally agree.

Okay, so now you're not going to address any other complaint you had other than the price of a charger you don't need to use? This discussion has completely walked away from carplay at this point, it's now just apple bashing.

How does android decide any more than apple what you can and can't listen to? Or are you speaking specifically about Android Auto vs Carplay? In which case... there's nothing preventing car makers from installing both on top of their existing QNX software. Like Hyundai has already done... If you don't like that, you

You can already buy a car from Hyundai which has Android Auto and Carplay. There is nothing preventing auto makers from running both apps on their existing head unit software.

The UI is not provided by your head unit software. The head unit software basically allows your phone to use it as a display... so if you buy a new phone or new software for your phone comes out, the skin will get updated.

You don't need to do that, because there's nothing preventing car makers from installing carplay and android auto. Hyundai already does this. Carplay isn't hardware, it's software. For that matter it's software that runs on a standardized OS which most infotainment systems already use, QNX. It was originally developed

You can have a car with android auto, the standard infotainment, and carplay.... Hyundai already offers this.

QNX is an OS already widely adopted by most infotainment systems, it was actually developed by Blackberry.

Why?

Carplay is an app that runs on most existing infotainment systems.... putting carplay in a car gives an iOS user the ability to use that interface instead. It does not however replace the existing infotainment system..... so if you don't have an iPhone you can still use the infotainment system exactly as you always

Then lucky for you, you can still use the Auto makers nav system, regardless of wether the car has carplay or not.

Carplay is an application that runs on QNX, the OS used by most infotainment systems. Same applies for android auto.

For some reason a lot of commenters seem to think this is some apple/google holy war... on the other side of it i think auto makers don't want to relinquish control of their infotainment experience. Thinking either that they can do better, or that letting apple/google do it for them admits how horrible they are....

Hey! That sounds kinda like what android auto and carplay do... let the infotainment screen act as a display for your android/apple device.
