True on the first

Yeah I kind of think that more and more, not because I'm against students doing a sport, but because of what a shitty deal they're getting... I am assuming rec basis means intramural?

Oh ok I was a little confused. Yeah I absolutely agree, football is a brutal sport, and they're essentially crippling kids. I just think they should have a choice and you do too haha

Yeah being able to market your own brand should absolutely be a goddamn thing already and it drives me nuts. I'm not taking jersey sales (but that should too, and everyone should have a name on the jersey since that's an artifical way to kneecap that). But exactly like you said, Steph Curry should have been able to

Honestly I don't really have a problem with this. I'd rather someone have the choice to destroy their body for pay rather than for an overvalued scholarship

Yeah I've read a decent amount of it. My point is if you're gonna restrict them from playing in the pros using that logic, why allow them to do it in college for no money? Or high school or as kids??

ah that's bogus

if we're ok with teenagers bashing their brains out in high school, they should be able to do so for money when they turn 18 for sure.

Well if you want to talk about the big two we've been discussing, the NBA and NFL forces you to either play college ball or wait out. If you wait out, good luck getting drafted. the whole thing stinks head down.

We should, but the value of that is artificially determined by the schools. They can claim it has a $100,000 value. It sure as fuck does not.

Russia's basically been spending the last decade gearing up for revenge. No one should be surprised of this shit

Yeah that's my point. Ultimately it is horseshit that some kid can go give himself CTE and we pretend that a 4 year scholarship, which can be yanked at any time, is fair compensation. But I just don't think people realize how much other sports are dependent on that. Ultimately I think if it means that some of those

I'm not denying that most of these programs make oodles of money. They do! My point is that you have to find a compensation structure that works (flat fee for every football player? pay what you want under a cap system?, etc) and what impact it will have elsewhere.

Posting it here since it's in the greys otherwise, but my main point is those two sports essentially subsidize every other college sport. I want those athletes to be compensated in some fashion, but if it is not done right, it could effectively kill sports across the board at a lot of smaller schools.

I think deadspin's boner for relegation/promotion systems is really silly for pro sports, but it would be cool for college. Ultimately I think there are similar problems, but I think it's at least feasible for college sports.

Well duh. But occasionally you do get programs shining through after years of futility. But even without that, the point is that being in D1 means you print money even for the big two sports even if you never become a real threat for the championship. Ultimately those two programs subsidize virtually all the other

Yeah that's another problem. If it were on merit based on the value they provide (read: how much $ does your sport draw) it would only be football and men's basketball. I don't have a problem with that, but I am sure that athletes in other sports would. And I think that would raise some Title Nine issues.

Real talk for a sec:

I would always take big tables and just angrily mumle AUTOGRAT to myself in the back over and over and over...

That ketchup story is one of the most god awful things I have ever read
