Even just looking at the core three, the one that you really, really, need to get right is Harry and him turning out to be the best actor of the bunch is just really fortunate for the franchise. The later movies would have been a lot worse if they had to work around a terrible actor in the lead.

Most games have source material that could have been written by a five year old. If you’re making a Doom movie you’re doing it entirely to slap the name Doom on it so you can market to gamers and not for the scintillating story of “nameless guy shoots a million generic demons.”

After watching Onward with my kids my 8-year old asked me why every movie is about dead parents lol. It does feel like pretty lazy writing at this point. I really liked Soul but even that had a whole arc about the protagonist claiming the mantle of his dead (of course) dad’s suit.

Toy Story 3 comes from the pixar era when they were laying on the melodrama *way* too thick in an effort to transition away from being seen as purely kids movies. It definitely worked even if it makes these movies a bit hacky in retrospect.
