In “The Thing” you see MacReady’s breath but you don’t see Childs’. I know this because I was at a Q & A where John Carpenter spoke and when asked if one of them was an alien, he said “it’s all in the breath.”

The Thing script doesn’t have an answer but Childs does have his gold tooth. And if the Thing replicates the person through DNA then the gold tooth wouldn’t be there. I suppose I prefer to think that they were 2 humans that froze to death at the end. :-)
