Functionally there’s still too little known about the Pixel phone to compare. The question I’d like to know is if over cellular it can actively sync with Google calendar, mail and contacts without having a phone nearby and have a simplified, but fully functional, app on the phone for all of these.

it’s not a replacement for forums, it’s a method for real-time and asynchronous communication for groups.  The appeal is largely voice channels, the ability to have private rooms and locked channels, and the ability to easily post all kinds of media.
