Evolution only applies to living things. Twinkies are Undead.

The TV show is wrong. Cooking predates brewing by tens of thousands of years. Every human society including pure hunter/gatherers cooks and so far as we can tell cooked. The discovery of fermented beverages gave a big boost to grain production and helped bring about the Agricultural Revolution and the rise of cities.

GG&S gives a society some advantages. Cooking is fundamental

We were cooking long, long before agriculture. And plenty of societies that don't brew beer such as the Inuit, the San, many Native Americans and so on cooked and did not brew alcohol.

What I mean is there would be no reason to put microfilm, flash drives or anything else non-magnetic in one of those

I'd be a lot less offended if they edited the photo to make her expression look angry as she drew a knife. Maybe a followup ad showing him lying on the ground with the caption "Yep. Rapist went down smoothly"

Microfilm? Hardly anyone uses that nowadays. Digital media are so much better.

That's it. You win. Everyone else go home now

Cylindrical? Maybe I'll be able to smuggle a thermos of good coffee onto the plane

Grownups are adult about their adultery.

Pythons would need to do a LOT of evolving to have brains that gave them much more oomph than a beansprout. I've had pythons. They are highly optimized at a very special limited skill-set. Otnay ootay ightbray.

And a lot of them end up with dietary deficiency diseases. For example the author of the Voracious Eats blog. She did everything right and nearly died from a raw/vegan diet. Now she eats a moderate amount of meat and dairy and has her health back.

This, so very very much this.

It started out adequate and spiraled downward at dizzying speed. After trying to slog our way through the sixth or seventh book we began calling it "The Great Waste of Time"

Mormon Scott Card :)

Sadly, not one of them was improved by going past three books. The best you can say is that Tehanu was as good and Frank Herbert's later Dune books were no worse. The ones by his son suck a bowling ball through fifty feet of garden hose. The rest? Not one single improvement

You really REALLY need to reference Wrangham's excellent book/extended review article Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human. It goes into a lot of detail on these and many related topics. One of the most refreshing things is how he demolishes the raw food faddists in the first few pages.

+1 for the phrase "Big Swinging Brain".

My Lawsuit Sense is tingling. If A&F ever finds the people who did this they won't even give them the common courtesy of a reach-around.

Because along with boobs and ass small feet are one of the criterion male preferences. I didn't think so, but the research is pretty unequivocal.
