Exactly.
Exactly.
I find it weird that people take it all so seriously. It is only a group of people voting for what they like and if you don’t share their opinion it doesn’t make it wrong, just different.
I thought this article also did a good job of addressing that we need to acknowledge the complexity.https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/nancy-armour/2020/01/27/kobe-bryant-dont-shy-away-nba-legends-legacy/4584605002/
It’s not just “imperfect”. Nicole was most definitely murdered and there is absolutely no room for doubt that a crime occurred. Bryant’s contention (as it usually is in these cases) was that the victim wasn’t actually raped, which is easy enough to accept for people who are primed to believe a beloved celebrity over…
That was a beautifully written article, particularly this last line:
“Because if you wanted to encourage a culture of rape, the best way to do so would be to endorse and honor the most visible members of society who have been accused of rape.”
I’ll admit I was hyperbolic, but a shit ton of male and female athletes from across the globe adored him. Just take a look at the reactions.
Just as Tom Brady’s obituary will mention Deflategate and Darryl Strawberry’s will cover his struggles with substance abuse, it is journalistic malpractice to sum up Bryant’s life and career without mentioning the credible rape allegations.
“His effect on every male and female sport was and can be felt.”
Thank you for this. The Root, which usually has excellent, insightful coverage, had an article listing Sonmez’s tweet as a “mistake”, alongside things like the BBC’s ‘In Memoriam’ montage featuring LeBron James, or an MSNBC reporter calling his team the Los Angeles [N-word]s. This post is much more nuanced and…
Kobe Bryant was who he was. An otherworldly basketball player, a seemingly loving father who not only adored his daughters but uplifted them to be as powerful and as great as they could be, but a rapist. It’s how you reconcile with that that will define how you see Kobe Bryant. He did a lot for sports and his…
I pointed out this article on twitter that called Kobe to account too because we can mourn his, and the other people’s premature deaths, due to the way they died and still talk about why sports stars get away with criminal acts.
The better question is why does anyone care who is nominated for an Oscar for anything. It’s an advertising gimmick.
Coincidentally proved my own point, there! I mispoke using that word and realized it a few minutes later and fixed it. Eh, it’s Monday morning; I’d rather just grunt and have people know my meaning than talk!
I mean, his statement is technically correct. The problem is the best work got ignored this year. Fucking Todd Phillips got a nom over Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Kent, and Celine Sciamma. Lupita N’Yongo ignored in the acting categories, so ScarJo could get TWO noms.
Also, take THAT everyone who doesn’t consider Stephen King a writer.
Keith Richards? (Sorry, too easy, I know)
Good thing black people and women don’t suffer from the sinful weakness of vanity.
Yep. This.
The Oscars were created by the studio heads decades ago to appeal to actors sense of vanity, so they could get big flashy awards instead of more pay.
There’s no such thing as the best picture/director/etc. of the year. That’s not how art/culture works.
