I was extremely underwhelmed by season 2, but thought that season 3 was a blast. So, skip season 2 and give season 3 a shot.

I started reading the Hobbit to my 8 year old and she loves it, but yeah, by 10 I think LOTR is the way to go. I just started a reread, and the Prologue section covers the Gollum stuff in detail, so you don’t even need it to know about the ring and how Bilbo got it. 

Yes! I found the finale to be intensely moving and beautiful, and to see so many react so angrily to it was strange. I found that “wave” metaphor and the idea of the final door to be really comforting. I didn’t find it bleak at all.

I could not stop crying during that scene. It was so beautiful.

I really enjoyed it, but I can definitely see what you mean. I loved the idea of that “other place”, because it’s one of those ideas that feels like Stephen King borrowed it from the back of my own mind.
