What's funny, in a "Geez am I stupid" kind of way, is that I've seen this episode probably ten times, and only realized that he did that deliberately in the most recent rewatch. It really is a nice little bit of character work.

What's funny is, I saw the cartoon as a child, and had the exact opposite reaction. Found it totally fascinating. Reading the book later was a real treat. It is amazing. I have to reread it every so often, just to remind myself how awesome it is.
