The very very obvious answer is they just shouldn’t have done the cosplay. I really don’t understand this notion that nothing should be socially off limits, but if you literally can't do a cosplay without coloring your skin to another common human color, then you just don't do the damn cosplay. It isn't that difficult.

It is incredibly pedantic to pretend that people were not aware that the costume itself was not literally blackface.  They knew what it was shorthand for, you knew, and you’re shoehorning this in as an example of the ‘overreach’ of cultural appropriation arguments when it’s anything but.

No.  Just... no.  There is literally no argument for ‘cosplay accuracy’ being so damn important that white people doing a particular cosplay need to darken their skin in order to cosplay as another race.

Yeah they can be but they very clearly are not upset about the boob armour, which is kind of funny.

Considering that this is Mercy’s 5th lunar new years skin while several actual Asian characters don’t yet have one, it seems to me they are already bottling up each individual culture such that everyone stays in their respective lanes. Namely the white woman in the Asian lane, and the Asian character in nothing.
