These are all really cool use cases, but I hold my phone by the edges that they're looking to use. They'd have to have some wicked-good detection of what touches are on purpose and what's on accident to make this useful.

It seems like this would just make a more awkward way of gripping the lid, and would force you to rest (parts of) your fingers on the super hot lid, instead of the pretty hot handle.

It's really their size, weight, and durability. At the Reno air races, there used to be just a few cameras in some of the high-end planes. Now, everybody's plane is bristling with them.

I don't lock my phone, because I like android's lock screen shortcuts (e.g., the camera).
However, I do have the android device manager set up, so I can add a lock code (or locate it, or wipe it) if I do lose it. Not the safest setup, but I'm lazy and optimistic.
