Plus the light doesn't even look realistic and those big eyes.
It's really not an update to a more modern style, it's an update to be closer to the original manga. The original art was CRAZY long limbed and slender.
The new designs are really just an upgrade to modern art and animation. If you look at something like Akira or Ranma 1/2 or Galaxy Express 999, the characters are very "doughy." Faces that are more round, thicker bodies, etc.
You know, like a Quentin Tarantino movie. I work anachronistically.

Furthermore the Firehouse would encroach upon their modular city line. If they could somehow get it in there, it would make sense. The rejection of the Firehouse made sense though.
If it had just been the short moe creeper bit, I feel it would have worked so much better. The writers really do milk the openings sometimes.

It's great that she was able to lose weight, but the bullying is still a very negative, very bad thing. What happened in the past matters because this shit is going to continue to happen in the future. The end was happy, but it doesn't justify the emotional abuse that initiated it.
