Not exactly...in order to exit the submarine, you have to pressurize the escape hatch to overcome pressure at depth. That means your lungs would be carrying equivalent pressure, and you would have to exhale on the ascent, or you would suffer an embolism. At some point, you couldn’t hold the air in anyway.

Yeah, old diesel boat sailor here. To the untrained eye, a snorkel tube could be mistaken for a periscope...most people only think of periscopes rising from the sail. Lots of hardware in there. Discomfort, that’s funny. I recall feeling as though an ice pick had been thrust into my ear drum, when the snorkel valve

Damn, and to talk about something with no escape systems...

I had a russian colonel or something doing a nuclear inspection in germany in the mid 90s help me push my car out of a ditch in the snow. I laughed after the fact...I think I was an E-4 at the time...I probably made more than him and thought he might have been looking for a tip, but seriously most people at an

Not rude at all! Not sure why in general, earlier I was somewhat busy, sry.

The Terrible Hours. Great book.

Not trying to be rude, but why do people comment without reading? What’s the point? It makes no sense to me.

I’ve experienced diesels running with boat submerged...it’s surprising someone didn’t shut them down manually. They would have had time. The first thing that happens from the huge vacuum caused by the diesels sucking the air from the boat is an intense pain in the eardrums, and even that takes a while. The snorkel

No, the Taliban wasnt ‘obliterated’ in 2002 and to make such a ridiculous claim only demonstrates your lack of knowledge and understanding about the Afghan conflict.

No, it would have likely freed up money. Buying a couple hundred light attack aircraft at the cost of a few billion dollars would likely have saved much more money by offsetting a portion of the many billions in fuel, operational and lifecycle costs inflicted by using America’s now run-down fast jet fleet in the same

Holy fuck that is one serious run on sentence that made my head hurt so much I have no idea what I was going to say but really you didn't make much sense anyways what were we talking about again I can't remember we're all fine here how are you pew pew boring conversation anyways.

Ask our foes to do the same!

On the other hand, CO2 poisoning is a pretty shitty way to go... hopefully their CO2 scrubbers are in good, working order long enough for hypoxia to set in.

USS Squalus, late spring 1938.

USS Squalus

Interesting. Thanks.

To be clear: I “starred” your post for the diving information, not because you got “nitrogen narcosis”... Haha.

Read my reply to the OP below. If you know what is happening it might be scary for a little bit but you’ll basically be drunk and silly well before you lose consciousness. Source - I went through hypoxia training in the Air Force and despite KNOWING I was sitting in a depressurized chamber with very little O2 I was

Would decompression be an issue? I thought the inside of subs are kept at atmospheric pressure so it’s not like during a scuba dive where you’re on compressed air.

Oxygen deprivation may be physically painless, but there has to be a lot of psychological pain as you feel yourself fading over the course of hours, and struggle to hang on.
